Today we’re here with a super special guest, Ben Chew, the owner of Illume Aesthetics, one of the most popular medical spas in the US.
Ben and his wife, Nurse Practitioner Jen Bullock, started Illume Aesthetics in January 2017. Back then, Ben was in business ownership in the health club space, and Jen worked as a nurse in a hospital.
But then, one day, Jen decided to purchase a $150,000 laser. That one investment, which was supposed to just be a weekend and afterwork side hustle, resulted in Illume Aesthetics, a seven-figure Med Spa, and an Allergan Platinum Plus partner.
Talk about a success story!

It All Started With a Skin Laser
Ben and Jen’s Med Spa, Illume Aesthetics, injects more injectables than 95% of the Med Spas in the United States.
However, things weren’t always this way.
Illume Aesthetics’ story starts in January 2017, with a $150,000 laser and a side hustle. Back then, Ben was in a whole other business, a CrossFit affiliate, and Jen was working as a nurse at the local hospital.
One day, she walked in after work and told Ben she’d purchased a skin laser. She bought it on finance, and it was going to pay for itself, she said.
She wanted to use it for her new side hustle, a Med Spa. She was going to treat friends and family after work and on weekends, and she was going to pull enough revenue from it to make the monthly payments needed.
Back then, Ben didn’t know anything about Med Spas. But his wife was excited about this new venture, and he wanted to support her just like she always supported him on his entrepreneurial ventures.
So, he said, “That’s awesome, you go do your thing!”
From Side Hustle to Seven-Figure Business
The side hustle went on for a couple of years, and then, in 2019, it was clear it wasn’t a small operation anymore. It had grown big enough for it to become a full-blown business, and Ben and Jen needed to treat it as such.
So Jen decided to leave her job at the hospital and work at the Med Spa business full-time. After a while, Ben and Jen had to look at the Med Spa business and decide where to go from there.
And to them, the answer was clear: It had a lot of potential, but it lacked the business systems and processes that could help them scale it and grow it into the seven-figure business it is today.
That’s where Ben comes into play. With his business background, he knew exactly where to start.
