Gaining or regaining confidence is a life-changing experience. One that is made possible by aesthetic treatments. However, many people refuse to get help because there is so much stigma surrounding the beauty industry.
But aestheticians like Apryl Witherspoon are challenging those stigmas and bringing aesthetics closer to those who can and should benefit from it.
Leaving the Broken Healthcare System
Apryl is a family nurse practitioner with more than a decade of experience in healthcare. Like most of us, she started working in this field because she cared deeply about people and wanted to help them in their most vulnerable moments. And while she mostly enjoyed her work as a nurse, she eventually began to notice the problems of the healthcare system.
In order to meet high demands, she was forced to move patients in and out very quickly. This made it impossible for her to get to know them and help them how she would have liked to.
“60 patients a day was really not my thing. How do you really get to know a person and be able to help them like that? You can’t.” – Apryl Witherspoon
And to make matters worse, she found herself working ALL the time, which eventually caused her to burn out.
She decided to leave the broken medical system and pursue her passion for aesthetics. She taught herself everything she needed to know to open a medical spa and did it. But, while her dedication truly is admirable, what really made her a success was her ability to identify and fill a void in the market.
Aesthetic Treatments Are for Everyone
When she started to provide aesthetic treatments at her medical spa, Apryl noticed that people of color always reacted peculiarly when they saw her for the first time. It was almost like a relief when they noticed that she would be treating them. They knew immediately that she would understand and know how to help them.
She realized that aesthetic treatments were always targeted to a specific type of person and not people of various skin tones and genders.
“Usually, when you go into locations, they don’t have many photos of men. And men want to get treatments too. They just don’t know if they can because they have never seen a picture of another male.” – Apryl Witherspoon
Apryl saw an opportunity here, an untapped market she could conquer. And so she did. The rest is history.
Today, she is the proud owner of NWME Aesthetics, a med spa that restores natural beauty for ALL skin tones and genders, and she is extremely successful.
